As you may have noticed, we''re doing a little ''getting to know us'' few blogs. You''ve booked us as your Surrey-based Wedding Band, so it''s only fair we introduce ourselves, right?!
You''ve met Ben, so this time is the turn of Matthew, banjo/ukulele/guitar/singer/accountant extraodinaire!
Position in band?
I play the banjo, ukulele and all of the guitars – a natural consequence of owning all the guitars. My workhorses are an LGX-SA (which is unbreakable) and an LGXT (Bluey) made by a wonderful Canadian company called Godin. If you any interest in guitars check them out! They run into a DI for the acoustic signal and a VOX AC15 combo amp for the electric, which I feel safe to say has stood the test of time. I try new effects pedals as often as I can buy them too – anything that can make my guitar sound like an organ always has a home on my pedalboard.
What music do you like?
How does anybody ever answer this question? I like lots of music – from The Beatles to Kate Bush, John Martyn to The Killers, John Mayer to Bjork, Dave Matthews Band to the Riverdance. That’s right, I own the Riverdance album. I feel no shame.
What other projects are you working on right now?
I’m a function musician through and through. It’s weddings, birthdays and corporate parties all year round for me. From time to time I’ll play bass for the singer Ben’s original project Cassicus, if he asks nicely.
What are your musical icons/influences?
Those who inspired me to play guitar around at age 12 include Eric Clapton, Paul Kossoff, Santana, Slash, Foo Fighters and the always excellent Bill & Ted. As I got older progressive rock firmly placed its roots in my brain and the likes of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra and the genius that is Peter Gabriel started to prematurely age me into a septuagenarian. To slow down this virulent onset of nostalgia I have been consuming the best contemporary music I can find including Haim, Chvrches, Lissie, Future Islands and Meg Myers. I can’t recommend Meg Myers enough. Everybody’s introduction to her music should be the song Heart Heart Head.
Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
I unenthusiastically went fishing once. I threw the line poorly a couple of times and prayed I didn’t catch one - so definitely not a hunter. I’m a modern gentleman so I much prefer paying people to gather for me and deliver it to my door. Evolution is truly wondrous.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
I’d be so very, very white. Why? Immortality. Nobody uses the white crayon.
What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
Car journeys for me are singing practice time so I generally think in half remembered lyrics. ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if...la laaa better. Then we wouldn’t have to…LEARN TO INDICATE!’ A stream of consciousness best left inside my head.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A chimpanzee called Caesar. Because I’m a winner.
What animal are you actually like?
A red squirrel. Hoard and hibernate. Often found sitting on fences frustrating those on both sides.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
I turned 28 and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Hilarious.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Don’t rush me. I’m still working on avoiding turning 29.
How many square feet of pizza can Ben (singer) eat?
Trick question – most of it ends up on the floor.
